Team Surrey Netball Charity Tournament

The University of Surrey netball club hosted their famous annual charity Netball Christmas Tournament on 10th December at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford! This tournament is well known not just in the Guildford netball community but in the whole of the university with places filling up early every year.

The Christmas tournament is a chance for members of the Guildford community to get some guys and gals together and have lots and lots of fun (with some teams being very competitive!). Surprisingly, it is always the guys who approach the committee early into the semester asking what date the tournament is so they can make sure they are free to take part!

We had 9 teams competing with a mix of all walks of life. We had netball players, rugby players, American football players, a team of ultimate Frisbee players, a team of paramedic students as well as people who have never played netball before, but quickly got into it and loved it!

This year, the committee made the decision to donate everything we raised from entry to the raffle to Cancer Research UK in memory of the amazing Tom Reseigh, an integral part to the development of Indoor Netball and a familiar visitor to where we held the tournament as one of Surrey Storm’s managers. He meant so much to a lot of people, not just the Surrey Storm community but also personally to a lot of members of the club.

After a brilliant day of netball with lots of laughs we had our finalists: Dashing Through the Hoes and Bau Ballers. It was a thrilling final with the score going back and forth, but in the end Dashing Through The Snow came out on top! Special mention also goes to Lost Hope who won the Team Spirit award.

Overall, we raised almost £400 for charity with some very happy people going home with some amazing raffle prizes such as a pair of custom leggings from Team Surrey’s kit supplier Player Layer, tickets to the Surrey Scorchers game later on that day and a scrumptious cake made by our club president, Becca.

Special thanks must go to Surrey Sports Park, Team Surrey, University of Surrey, Player Layer, England Netball and Surrey Storm for helping with the promotion of this event and providing raffle prizes, arena space and support!
